ESL Resources for Teaching Spanish Speakers

Level: B1-B2 - Intermediate / Upper-Intermediate

Time: 90 minutes

Burger. Mountain. Series. Idea. Nature. Pyjamas. Do your students pronounce these words correctly?

Probably not! Why? Because these words closely resemble their Spanish equivalents, leading students to instinctively apply their own pronunciation.

Never fear, we have the perfect lesson plan for you. It starts with some simple but engaging speaking questions about fast food, followed by a listening comprehension activity featuring a famous scene from Pulp Fiction—giving students plenty of exposure to the correct pronunciation of burger and ample chances to say it themselves.

Next, we introduce the concept of L1 transfer to help students understand why these mistakes happen, and look at more English words that commonly trip them up.

As always, we end with lots of speaking practice to reinforce their correct pronunciation, and help your learners improve their fluency and confidence.

We recommend having something to eat before you teach this lesson, or you’ll end up rushing off to find your nearest Maccies afterwards!
