It’s finally here, our absolute favourite day of the year—Sant Jordi!

For the uninitiated, April 23rd is La Festa de Sant Jordi—one of Catalonia’s most beloved national days and a celebration of their patron saint, Saint George. What began centuries ago as a romantic tradition of exchanging roses eventually merged with World Book Day, blossoming into a vibrant celebration of books, reading, and Catalan culture. For one glorious day, the streets become open-air markets filled with flower stalls and bookstands, there’s a whole host of literary events to attend, and if you’re lucky, you might even get a rose from your students!

Whether you're based in Catalonia and want to bring the spirit of the day into your lesson, or you’ve got a few avid readers in your class, this lesson plan is just what you need.

We start with some speaking questions suited to both bookworms AND reluctant readers. Students then watch a short video about Montreal’s booming book club scene, learn some useful vocabulary from the clip, and practise using it in context. To finish off, they’ll collaborate to choose a book for their very own imaginary book club.

Perfect for celebrating the joy of reading—and to give your students plenty to talk about.
